If You Missed Bitcoin’s Bottom, Don’t Miss Ethereum’s Next Big Upgrade

Ethereum is at a turning point that serious investors should watch closely. With critical upgrades, new leadership, and breakthrough technology, it’s shaping up for its biggest evolution since launch. Here’s what’s happening and why missing it might be like missing Bitcoin at its lows.

A Historic Inflection Point

Ethereum has always wrestled with the so called “blockchain trilemma”: how to balance decentralization, security, and scalability. For years, Ethereum chose decentralization and security over raw speed, leaving it stuck at about 16–17 transactions per second (TPS).

ZK real-time proving enables Ethereum to verify many more transactions per block without demanding more from validators’ hardware. This means higher gas limits, faster finality, and a path to 1,000 TPS (or more) while preserving decentralization.

Ethereum Foundation researchers suggest realistic goals of 1,000 TPS by 2027–2028, with further scaling possible as proofs improve.

A Revamped Leadership

Another major change is governance. Ethereum’s leadership has faced criticism for slow execution and fragmented goals.

In 2025, the Ethereum Foundation replaced its executive director with two co-executive directors:

-Hsiao-Wei Wang: a research-focused leader to maintain Ethereum’s long-term vision.
-Tomasz Stanczak: a pragmatic builder with experience leading Nethermind’s 200 person team.

This balanced leadership aims to move faster while staying true to Ethereum’s core values.

A Clearer Roadmap

The new leadership also launched a more focused roadmap with three core priorities:

1. Scaling Layer 1 (Ethereum Mainnet): 
 — 100x TPS over 4 years. 
 — Reducing block times from 12s to 6s.

2. Scaling Blobs (Layer 2): 
 — Expanding data storage so rollups don’t fragment or leave Ethereum.

3. Improving User Experience: 
 — Making Ethereum and L2s feel like one seamless chain.

Beyond Rollups: Native and Based Rollups

Starting in 2026, Ethereum will support two big new designs:

- Based Rollups 
 — No centralized sequencers. 
 — Ethereum validators order transactions directly. 
 — Enables real-time interoperability (universal synchronous composability).

- Native Rollups 
 — Essentially full Ethereum clones in separate rollups. 
 — Execution, settlement, and data availability all secured by Ethereum. 
 — Ideal for institutions and companies wanting blockchain benefits without complex infrastructure.

These upgrades solve today’s fragmentation problems and offer tailored blockchain solutions for diverse industries.

Institutional Push and Regulation

Ethereum isn’t just evolving technically. A new initiative called Etherealize launched to boost institutional adoption and ensure Ethereum has a voice with regulators.

In 2025, they even presented in front of the U.S. House of Representatives. Expect staking ETFs and clearer regulatory support to drive further capital inflows.

Why This Matters for Investors

The key takeaway? Ethereum is maturing. It’s fixing its biggest weakness (scalability) while strengthening its moat:

- Deep decentralization. 
- Proven security. 
- Massive developer ecosystem. 
- Institutional interest.
